Why this matters.

Retailers, caterers and market traders in the UK must display prices clearly, and the Price Marking Order 2004 requires the selling price, including VAT, to be shown for goods on sale to consumers. The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, now strengthened by the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, treat misleading or missing price information as an unfair commercial practice. Since April 2025 the CMA can fine businesses directly up to 10% of global turnover, without needing to go through the courts.

If you sell by weight or volume, the Weights and Measures Act 1985 and the Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations 2006 set rules on quantity marking, average quantity and the use of approved, calibrated equipment. The Unit Pricing Order 2008 also requires unit prices such as price per kg or per litre for many goods. Trading Standards can issue improvement notices and prosecute, and offences can lead to unlimited fines.
