  • 6.6 millionWorking days lost to musculoskeletal disorders (HSE)
  • MHOR 1992Governing regulations
  • Avoid, assess, reduceHierarchy of controls

Why this matters.

Manual handling is the biggest single cause of workplace injury in Great Britain. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess the risk of any task that cannot be avoided, and reduce that risk as far as reasonably practicable. This applies to every workplace, from warehouses and care homes to offices receiving deliveries and retailers restocking shelves.

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, you also need a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and proper information and training for staff. Musculoskeletal disorders account for tens of millions of lost working days each year, and the HSE can issue improvement notices or prosecute where employers cannot show a documented assessment. A short, structured review now is far cheaper than an injury claim later.
